“What We’re Made Of” is a build-your-own creature interactive inviting children to explore the ideas of emotions and self-expression through creating their own unique creatures. Each shape embodies a certain emotion or attribute, so as the users build onto the wooden frame, they are infusing these emotions into the creature they are creating. Through exploring the nature and diversity of emotions, this interactive aims to foster empathy and understanding in children.
BACKGROUND & RESEARCH
In contemporary society, the cultivation of empathy among children has become increasingly crucial in fostering inclusive communities and nurturing compassionate individuals. However, traditional educational approaches often lack engaging and effective methods to instill empathy in young minds. Existing interactive experiences may not fully address the complexity of emotions or promote a deep understanding of diverse perspectives.
Empathy in children is an essential foundation for emotional intelligence, a trait necessary for healthy social interactions and relationships throughout life. Instilling empathy at a young age is crucial, as it nurtures a child’s ability to understand and relate to the feelings and experiences of others

THE SHAPES
Each shape embodies a certain emotion or attribute, so as the users add the shapes to the wooden armature, they are infusing these emotions into the creature they are creating. The variety of shapes, colors, and sizes allow for extensive customization and creativity.
Through compiling many shapes together, my aim is to show how all of these different emotions can exist within one being, showing how we are all multifaceted creatures. It also explores the idea that these emotions can exist within creatures other than ourselves.
