"Falam" (ഫലം) is a set of six musical fruit toys based off of the native fruits of Kerala, India. These toys allow children of immigrants from Kerala to familiarize and interact with aspects of Kerala they will not find in the US. Falam creates a connection to a child’s cultural identity that is playful, interactive, and fun!
SPRING 2023
BACKGROUND
I chose to focus on the children of immigrants, specifically the children of Indian immigrants. Children of immigrant families often times feel a disconnect between themselves and their culture. This lack of connection with their cultural identity in their earlier years can results in the rejection of that part of their identity when they grow up.
With the focus of India, I targeted Kerala, a state located in the Southwestern region of India. Kerala has a rich tradition of art, music, and culture, with a strong focus on nature and natural materials. In relation to my project, Kerala is home of cultivation to many exotic, rare fruits like jackfruit, custard apple, and cashew, because of its tropical climate.
RESEARCH
Importance of Connecting with Culture at a Young Age:
Cultural appreciation and awareness contribute to building positive self-image and sense of belonging. It also has a positive impact on one's mental health and overall wellbeing.
Effects of Musical Toys on Children:
Music ignites all areas of child development and builds fine and gross motor skills. Playing with musical toys also enhances hand-eye coordination as well as sensory development. With a set of musical instruments, as I designed, it promotes a level of social interaction with others as well as team building.
